Upscale seafood featured for Super Bowl fans


Bacon scallops_318Shrimp, lobsters and crab are just a few of the upscale seafood items that U.S. retailers are featuring for what has become a huge holiday – Super Bowl 50 – which airs on 7 February.

“With Denver being involved in this game, it’s a big weekend for people having parties. We are certain to be pretty busy,” said Bruce Johnson, owner of Seafood Landing Market in Denver, Colo.

“We are pushing seafood for Super Bowl. It is turning into one of our top ‘holidays’ around here,” said Scott Nettles, senior director of perishables for Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets.

Seafood Landing is pushing both party foods such as wild Gulf shrimp, live lobsters, king crab leg, lobster tails and oysters, along with “certain fresh fish like salmon, tuna and swordfish – things that make attractive entrees. Some people plan whole meals,” Johnson said.

Both United and Price Chopper in Schenectady, N.Y., are primarily promoting items that can be used for hors d’oeurvers during Super Bowl parties.

“We are featuring many snack-type items, including Baja rock crab claws, 4-Bite cooked and raw shrimp, large cooked shrimp, fresh (made in-house) crab salad and seafood dips,” Nettles said. United Texas stores are also featuring West Texas Bacon-Wrapped Scallops or Shrimp Skewers at five for USD 5 (EUR 4.47).

United’s large, cooked shrimp retails for USD 7.99 (EUR 7.14) a pound and its large Baja rock crab claws are on special for USD 13.99 (EUR 12.50).

Price Chopper’s featured appetizer items for Super Bowl week include bacon-wrapped scallops and stuffed clams. However, the chain is predominantly promoting shrimp, including its 10-ounce cooked shrimp ring with cocktail sauce and its 32-ounce cooked shrimp ring.
